I have this in a 7 gallon planted tank. I'm glad there wasn't any coal to throw away. I have settings for such filtering. The sponge inside is coarse enough to allow water to pass through for a long time and is enough for a good culture of bacteria. The flow control worries me a bit. I would have preferred the pump speed to be adjustable rather than the drain. I had to reduce it for my Betta and I don't know if keeping the pump under that load 24 hours a day, 7 days a week is a good idea. Just take a look. The motor or impeller makes a hoarse clicking sound. I wouldn't call it loud. The volume is roughly equivalent to that of a medium-sized mechanical watch. When it's halfway above the water it's very noisy, but I don't think it's designed to pull the water that far. I would say that the worst thing about it is the atomizer. This is a very tight fit with no hardware. Every time I try to fit in, I want to break it. I think it will really break if I try to customize it too much.
