Review on Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens for Sony DSLR Cameras - International Version (No Warranty) by Alejandro Dabney

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great lens for Super 35mm digital cinema.

Very very happy with this lens! I use it on my FS700 shoulder mount and it fits the bill. image stabilization; Sony face detection, programmable focus with FS700, very easy breathing, very useful zoom range (27-157mm 35mm equivalent), servo zoom with FS handle. For the price, this is actually an unbeatable offer. I have over 50 lenses, some are 5 times more expensive than this, and this is the one I shoot with as a portable lens. Look at how much a servo lens with a comparable zoom range costs and you won't see any image or face detection. Defects. the infamous pincushion distortion. I don't find it particularly noticeable in most real-world situations. For me, that's a compromise I'm happy to live with on my shoulder. I have other landscape lenses (the Tokina 11-16mm is another phenomenal cheap lens that doesn't breathe and is sharp). I mention this for those of us who record Raw/10 bit ProRes video on, say, the Odyssey. The Sony firmware built into the camera cannot correct distortions when recording videos in raw format. So you need different lenses for buildings or straight lines. Another disadvantage is the variable zoom ring without fixed stops. You have to have a light touch for this thing to work! Mostly on the shoulder, I have auto focus/face detection so no problem. Compromise. Again, when on a slider or tripod, pull other lenses for manual focus with follow focus (long throw manual lenses). get the recognition they deserve with this sleeper.

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
  • Not happy with everything
