There were times when a Spikefinder I picked up decades ago fell off a shelf and broke. This one looked interesting so I gave it a try. It's the same basic concept - stick it on the wall somewhere you wouldn't expect it to be a stand, then run it along the wall. It has more features like scan depth, metal search and energy search. My old one seems to pick them up all the time, but I didn't know what he found (whether it was a hairpin based on start/stop points or something). To test this I took it to the store. Bathroom that I recently renovated. The bathroom was leveled to the nails and thanks to the many photos I took it was easy to see that everything was in the wall now that it was all back together. Finding wooden studs in the walls wasn't difficult. AC, metal and magnet were ok but not that specific. For example, the detector will alarm a few inches from a junction box when AC power is detected. This alarm was not related to the wiring, which was located in another area. Can't really complain as the detector did what it was supposed to do - warn of electrical interference in the area. So this is a professional tool? nope But it's enough to warn you of things and direct you towards the wooden posts.
