My wife is a keen handyman so she was fascinated by these things. First of all, if you don't want to increase the strength of the box, I wouldn't recommend it. We checked the reviews before purchasing and also looked at IKEA so we understood exactly what we were getting. She used nails in the corners after assembly (she added 2 extra nails below in the middle) and used contact putty with tape during assembly (she also applied it to the wood dowel holes), which was superfluous. for the nails alone made it perfectly strong. It's still compressed cardboard so I wouldn't sit on it and one of us was slightly damaged from the box being crushed in the corner on delivery I think but it wasn't too bad. My wife also used contact paper on the door and painted the outside of the box black (she didn't like the look of faux ebony so we used white to paint black). Good for painting. We turned ours into floating nightstands and attached them to the walls with L brackets.
