I had a 12 inch ruler and lost it. They serve as an excellent guide for cutting with a blade. I use them to cut plexiglass, thin wood, paper, upholstery, and fabric. After buying this I found my old one, both are equally good and I also bought the 18" from Walmart. The backing keeps it from slipping unless the surface is dusty.
