Review on Dell P2217H Professional LED Monitor - 21.5" Screen, Anti-Glare, 60Hz Refresh Rate by Brian Lawrence

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Bad quality control. BUT: Fantastic old school quality. Doesn't strain your eyes. Dell quality.

I'm not a fan of any company. Coming from an Acer 23 inch monitor from 2011 or so and I wouldn't buy a flash drive from them if they did. But what always sets Dell apart for me is that every legacy PC, monitor, keyboard, mouse and accessory I keep is still fully functional from 2003. Certainly not perfect, for example the Dimension power supply was replaced or an old LCD panel from 2003 2007 got a warranty. I can't even say the same about my Macs. This monitor is no exception as I absolutely can't afford it and I don't need a $500-1000 toy. But it puts me in a market full of potentially low quality, inferior and overpriced toys. Finding a monitor is intimidating and this monitor gave me a headache. I had to go through my third (two returns) to find one without 1-2 dead pixels. Luckily they got back to me immediately within a week if not after unpacking. I don't know if Dell uses a Samsung or LG panel but I blame them because this monitor is very typical Dell, heavy matte hard plastic and no ultra-thin compromises. I've owned the monitor for 6 months now, plus or minus 1500 hours of use which I think is a good minimum for a rating. He's still flawless. This is an LCD panel. So if you put it on an all-white screen, it certainly won't look exactly like a piece of whitewashed paper. But with no dead pixels, zero ghosting, and noticeable blackout, I'd say it was worth all the effort. And finally, an honorable mention. LED backlit monitors tend to strain your eyes and cause pain. Either a little or a lot, depending on the panel and configuration. Well, I'm happy to report that I've finally found an LED monitor that DOES NOT. I don't know what differentiates Dell from OEM LG, Samsung and the like, but they got it right. And that fact, to me alone, is worth half the price of this thing. Because anyone who owns an old LCD monitor knows how many hours we could spend with these things.
