When retiring old PCs, we had a struggle with erasing information from the hard drive, often on non-working computers. This device allows you to power on the hard drive outside the enclosure via a USB connection. I am using an Ubuntu PC which allows me to access my hard drive even with a windows virus without disturbing my work PC. With Gparted I can partition into an empty drive and format it to an Ext4 drive. Our Virusmaster uses it to get rid of stubborn infections and malware, using the hard drive coming out of the case as extra storage space on his desktop PC. Since I revive old PCs, this is a great way to test a hard drive or optical drive for reuse. Laptop, desktop, IDE or SATA, everything I tried worked with this adapter.
