I've used pretty much everything to hold the calipers. Coat hangers, twine, bandages have never provided a permanently satisfactory solution. So I swallowed a bullet and bought it. Slightly longer than most, they're made of stainless steel and are durable. I opted for a longer hanger to have some freedom to hang from one of the multiple coil spring spools. They have worked well on my Avalon so far. The front calipers have a shorter rubber hose so I could hook onto the coil spring in the perfect spot to keep it out of the way.
