Review on Enhanced Power-Only Amplifier Install Kit - Rockford Fosgate RFK8, 8 AWG by Kenneth Broszko

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great wire with some features

If I just reviewed the wire it would be a 5 star rating. I didn't think there were more than 1800 strands of copper, but the wire is very flexible and there's a lot of copper here. Just checking I would say the RF claims about their wire are correct. The only downside for some might be the look of the jacket; this is boring. I personally like it, but in my setup it doesn't matter because it's all hidden. This may not work on brighter settings. I liked that the large ring terminals were already installed on the ends so I didn't have to worry about crimping that large wire. Some have complained that the included red (positive) wire from the battery to the fuse holder is too long. It's about 12 inches, which is a good build length because you never know what mounting options you might have. I was able to close the gap to 4 inches. You can always cut; you can't anymore Some have complained about the ground wire; it's still copper - use with confidence and properly ground to chassis. RF provides an additional ring terminal if you wish to make a ground wire from the remaining red sheath. The cable fits perfectly into the 4 gauge jacks on my Alpine amp. The weak link in this set is definitely the fuse holder. First, the kit includes a 100 amp maxi fuse, not a 60 amp fuse. So be careful if 100 amps is too big for your application like it was in my case. This is not a showstopper; Oversized fuses of this size are available in 10A increments to 100A increments at your favorite auto parts store. Secondly, the fuse holder is not waterproof or even waterproof. It uses O-rings on the threads of the screw caps, but there is a large gap in the fuse holder body where the Maxi enters the body from the outside. I have used AGU and ANL circuit breakers and waterproof fuse holders - this is the strangest and most unsafe installation I have ever seen. It works, but I don't like the way this thing works. Water or moisture can easily enter the fuse holder between the fuse body and the O-ring or from the ends of the wires. Don't be fooled, it looks waterproof but it definitely isn't. I like the wire clips in the fuse holder; they are heavy However, the hex set screws that clamp the maxi fuse are either custom sized or weak metal; I can't find a socket wrench that will hold them on the fuse to my satisfaction. There's a rubberized plastic cover that should snap into place after you tighten the fuse, but it's not very secure. I don't hate the fuse holder - it's a 50/50 perspective. I like all the metal parts except for the small Allen set screws, but no plastic parts. Make sure you install it where it gets the least wet under the hood. Of course RF could supply a waterproof (or at least waterproof) AGU fuse holder at no extra cost. At the moment this works; Maybe over time I'll replace it with something better. Phoenix Gold is the king in this space in my experience (Stinger is good too). UPDATE: I checked out some of the other listings on Revain and saw that "non-brands" were offering waterproof AGU fuse holders AND thick wire for about half what I paid for this HF kit. Can't comment on the quality; You still get what you pay for, so there has to be a quality hit somewhere. However, out of all that is available from Revain this is the top in my opinion and I would order again based on the quality of the wire and the price. Great wire - great finish (I know other brands will be of lower quality). Non-standard brands will give you a lot more headaches than what I've described here and will be of a lot lower quality. I can live with a fuse holder as fuses are cheap and easy to get anywhere and I was able to fit them in a safe place under the hood. highlighted.
