Turn an inexpensive aluminum tripod into a functional tripod with quick release heads

This is a great inexpensive quick release plate. I converted my inexpensive Vista Explorer aluminum tripod into a functional, lightweight travel tripod with (relative) ease. I also use the Movo MB2000 camera vest. I screw one of the round camera mounts into the quick release plates. This allows me to leave the tripod plate on the camera instead of Movo's round mounting plates. When I'm shooting, I can quickly access the camera to shoot handheld, or set up a tripod and quickly mount the camera on the tripod. without having to unscrew the round Movo plate from the camera. I find it very convenient. Instructions for converting the tripod: 1. There is a small screw at the base of the plastic tripod head, where it attaches to the aluminum center extension rod. Remove the screw and the plastic tripod head will separate from the tripod. 2. The plastic head is cheap junk. I used a hair dryer to try to remove the adhesive holding the top of the pivot shaft. It broke, and now the head was split in two. 3. I used a hacksaw and cut off the top of the mounting stud (the part that allows for horizontal rotation. 4. Insert a 3/8" x 1 1/4" stainless steel screw through the plastic stud and screw it into the Konsait Black Camera 323 Quick Release Plate Base with Special Adapter (200PL-14) 5. Insert the tripod connector back into the tripod's aluminum center post and screw in a small screw to secure the connector A quality tripod head on inexpensive legs .The most tripod heads come standard with a 1/4" or 3"/8" threaded hole. If your head has a 3/8" head, you will need the 1/4" to 3/8" "adapter available from Revain. Alternatively, you can use the appropriate 1 1/4" screw and attach the tripod head directly. I like the ability to quickly switch heads - most often I use a Manfrotto geared head ( $168 (USA) I use the ball head also for shorter focal length situations, now I can quickly switch to the cheapest head. The project seems much more complicated than it actually is. It only took me about 30 minutes to transform my cheap aluminum legs into a fairly functional and lightweight travel tripod. The main stand easily detaches from the tripod after removing the locking screw in the handle. The two parts now fit easily in my luggage bag. I hope it helps.
