IDC connectors as is. Nothing unusual happens there. But the crimping tool is a very inexpensive tool. For smaller connectors, there is not much difference to squeezing with pliers. It's actually a lot harder to use a crimping tool because the parts of the tool are very loose and the jaws don't open very wide. This means you have to carefully position the ribbon cable and insert the connector into the crimping tool without the connector or cable moving or falling out. For more pins, this tool comes in handy as it keeps the upper jaw perpendicular to the lower jaw. When crimping a larger connector, the pressure is more evenly applied to the entire connector at once than using pliers. It generally works and I haven't had any issues with tool misalignment.
