I love the smell of fresh cotton sheets and they were lovely the first time I fell asleep on them. Unfortunately, we had a hot and humid summer that took a toll on my t-shirts and cotton sheets. I wore out one of the pillowcases in just over a month because my night sweats must react like acid to the fabric causing it to fray and fall apart like the knees of a worn pillowcase. Blue jeans begin to tear. Luckily the rest of the sheet set is holding up well, but you can tell the thickness of the sheet is very thin. I've been told to look for a higher thread count when buying bedding, but I think 80/20 polyester fabric that feels thick is what I need to look for at local stores where you can see that you're on the Buy trade islands. I still have classic 80/20 polyester blend shirts from thirty years ago that have survived hundreds of washes and collars that have yellowed a few times. The buttons were re-stitched several times and the armpit patches became permanent despite direct bleaching. These "old" shirts are draped over the new ones so they don't get yellow streaks on the hangers as they sit unused in my closet. Yes, I am retired and need to do a spring cleaning to bring new things to the Salvation Army or Goodwill. And yes, all cotton sheets and shirts still smell and feel great, they just don't always last.
