I just bought a boat and it didn't have a VHF installed yet. So I picked up this radio and decided that even if I get a built in later this would be a good fallback. This is probably the cheapest marine VHF I've seen in stock at the time of purchase and it's also a branded product. We've been gone all day. in the boat and it worked well - you could clearly hear the Coast Guard speaking. I didn't try to call anyone. My only complaint is that it only has a cigarette charger. Therefore I can only charge it in the boat or in the car. I'd rather have an AC charger and charge it up before going out, but for the price I think it's manageable. I wish there were at least specs that would tell me which alternative AC charger to use.
