Always turn it off before taking it out of the water
My husband cleaned one of my open turtle tanks I had one last December but I forgot to turn off that heater. He melted the plastic and died within 3 minutes. All in all, this is not a bad heater. Having used it outdoors I wasn't expecting it to be very accurate but it did a pretty good job. I set it to 78 but my thermometer read 75
