I received this Levoit Core 300 air purifier today and wanted to get a first impression. I've been using it for a few hours now and am sadly disappointed. A little about me: I'm not an air quality expert, I just love clean air. I am very sensitive to noise and light. I don't like white noise. I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to machines or gadgets, if I haven't had a few drinks who cares?! Unfortunately I don't drink anymore. I live in Los Angeles and am always concerned about air quality even though we use an entire house air conditioner with MPR 1900 filter filters that we change every 2-4 weeks (haha who am I kidding, my husband changes them). . I am allergic to dust mites and our cat and we have 3 furry and feathered pets in total. Husband sees an easy way to no longer need so many filters, but pets remain, sorry. I get emails from South Coast AQMD Air Alerts because I think I have too much free time and the outside air is almost never clean. Currently, during fire season, the air is harmful to everyone. When we open the door, smoke comes in. I have (3) Winix 5300-2 True HEPA, PlasmaWave, and odor-reducing charcoal filter air purifiers (I don't use the controversial PlasmaWave feature). You work for me 24/7. I also have (1) Hunter 30090 True HEPA Low Airflow Room Air Purifier. I rarely use the Hunter because it's very loud. For the record, Winix makes a great machine and I shouldn't try to buy anything else except for a few things: they're ugly and the damn light is on all the time! (Unless it's in sleep mode. But I won't leave it in sleep mode during fire season.) It would be unfair to compare all of their specs as they vary wildly in price, size, and features. But they have a few similar characteristics that I want to compare. The reason I bought the Levoit is because it's small, attractive and I liked that you can turn off the light. I was curious about the Levoit brand and wondered if they could be as good or better than my Winix. I was hoping they would impress as I wanted them for every bedroom and my office. I knew I was buying a more basic product than Winix, but because of the previously mentioned features and because it claimed to have the same 24dB noise floor as Winix, I got it. I figured if I could get this small, entry-level model and like it, I could upgrade to larger sizes and maybe even replace Winix. Doubtful, but I was open. Now that I've had it for a few hours: Pros: It's small and mighty. The light goes out. Hooray! Cons: too loud. Not as loud as Hunter, but much louder than Winix. The sleep setting that should be quiet is not quiet. I wonder am I bad? Level 1 is just as loud as level 3 on my Winix, but still not much air. You have to turn the TV up loud if it works in your room. Out of curiosity I did a quick test with a burned out match to see how it would absorb the smoke. But I was shocked to see the smoke slowly moving around him instead of straight into him. I didn't have another game to try again, but I'll try again. Of course, if it's true that he can't eat smoke, he'll be sent back. And yes, before you ask, I removed the plastic from the filter before running it. Air comes out, just not very much given the noise. Due to an unsuccessful smoke test, I only give 1 star because I can't put a zero. I will update this review after testing it again. Had it failed the smoke test and been that loud I would have given it at least 4 stars for its attractiveness and ability to turn off the lights, simple functions and fairly easy filter change. It's also reasonably priced and replacement filters are available.
