Too Much Work: Kitchen & Eating

As an avid cook and regular in the kitchen, I have never owned a food grinder, relying primarily on various sizes of food processors and graters. In the end I decided to take a chance and buy this one. I'm a bit disappointed after the first use. I wanted to see how it is with cherry tomatoes for a marinara sauce with fresh basil, garlic and thyme. I halved 2 pounds of cherry tomatoes lengthways to ease the grinder's ability to grind and extract. The grinder is extremely reliable and well constructed BUT it is inconvenient to work with. The design of the rotator plate connected to the handle is so close to the friction discs that it is difficult to grab and crush them. Even when the small cherry tomatoes were cut in half to speed up the process, he kept pushing them aside. I had to constantly slide the small tomato halves into the raised rim of the turntable to press them onto the grating disc. I used the largest orifice wheel so there isn't much drag when sanding. I had to do this a handful at a time and it took too long to process 2lbs. I had to use a spatula and constantly scrape the sides of the grinder to keep the tomato chunks where they could be grabbed. During this process I had to shell the skins about 4 times to continue with subsequent batches. As a 190-pound, 6-2 athletic build, I couldn't turn the crank while holding the mill handle due to the resistance, and I had to resort to stuffing the end of the crank into my waist at one end and holding my left hand on the opposite end of the grind jar to secure it for aggressive running. I do not recommend this grinder despite its solid all-stainless steel construction. It's just too complicated to use and very time consuming.
