This is an excellent head for light to moderate use. I use it for my camera, video and 18" telescope (well balanced). Stability is good, video panning is smooth; although you can't change the "resistance" to the panning movement. The round base where it attaches to the tripod is about 7/8 inch. Slightly smaller than the head I'm replacing. But for my applications it works great. As a mounting tip, when mounting on a tripod, you must tighten the base of the head to the tripod with pliers or channel locks. If you don't tighten it, it will loosen when pivoted to the left, causing wobble. This is a great head for your money. Considering the price, this is indeed a 5 star item.
