All you have to do is plug the NVME SSD into the adapter, then plug the adapter into an available PCI3 x4 slot, and then restart your computer. You need to initialize the SSD when it is new. When I first installed this adapter I used a heatsink but then I tried without a heatsink and if you have good ventilation in your computer there doesn't seem to be a need for a heatsink. In my case it didn't make a difference, so I use it without a heatsink. In terms of speed, I used the same SSD in both the M.2 slot and this adapter, and the test results are the same in both cases.
