It takes a good grip and some force to separate the pieces. I may have clamped mine too tight at some point, but they often get stuck. Sweaty fingers or in a hurry do not suit this product. Otherwise, I use the Ripper a lot and it's a handy tool. I like how it closes by itself so it doesn't hit anything when not in use. Admittedly this is the only ripper I've ever owned, but I think it's a good design because the ripper seems to be very good.
