Review on πŸ”’ Enhance Your Security: Hmount Solar Panel for Blink XT XT 2 Security Camera, Outdoor Weatherproof Solar Power Charger by Zach Clements

Revainrating 3 out of 5

I wasn't expecting much and was still disappointed

I bought two solar charging panels to try and fix the problem my girlfriend is having with her Blink XT2 cameras, which is draining the lithium batteries at an alarming rate. The panels arrived less than 24 hours after ordering. The Revain box was in good condition and the contents were secured with an air bag, but the solar panel boxes had crumpled corners and appear to be too small for their contents, particularly the nut that controls the mounting bracket angle. As another reviewer pointed out, there's an ON/OFF push button switch on the back and it's impossible to tell what position it's in. Luckily, the Blink camera will show you when it starts by turning on the IR illuminator, so you can use that to determine the switch position. The product description calls the hardware "heavy duty", but the plastic feels brittle and the screws are cheap and not stainless. the panel itself as well as the connection to Blink cameras. The compartment on the back of the solar panel that houses the battery and electronics doesn't have a rain seal, and the five small screws that hold the cover in place end with posts inside the compartment. The soft rubber cover over the power button is pressed into the back cover. Moisture can be drawn into the compartment unhindered along these paths by the capillary effect. My biggest concern is the durability of the panel as the power cord just comes out through a hole in the bottom of the case. While the rain shouldn't penetrate in this way, moisture and wetness from the fog will penetrate. My friend lives less than half a mile from the Pacific Ocean and fog and salty air are common. I suspect the bearing plate will fail within a year due to corrosion. Since the panels were already disassembled, I decided to try and extend their lifespan by applying a waterproof conformal coating to the electronics. The only thing I couldn't protect was the battery contact points because the coating isn't conductive. I will also cover the USB connector after connecting it to the Blink cameras to try to prevent water ingress. I will update this review as needed after the panels are installed.
