I used an 800 watt plastic welder hooked up to my 4 psi air compressor. I welded an irregularly shaped crack onto the gas tank of a Yamaha off-road bike that was about 2mm wide and 40mm long along the shaped edge. Using hot air from a welding torch, I heated the end of the crack and got a 2-3mm section shiny (i.e. soft, ready to melt) on both sides. I placed this strip directly on the edge of the soft area and pressed down, curling the strip along the tear and then simply running a heat gun along the seam until the strip was in place. Maybe 15 minutes before a full repair it looks surprisingly professional and most importantly the tank isn't leaking. I am very happy.
