I've never had really good quality in-ear headphones (also called "ear headphones"). No, the disposables that Apple gives away with its iPods don't count. My reference headphones are Sony MDR-V7506 and Audio Technica ATH-M40x. These E3000s sound closer to Audio Technicas than Sony. This means they sound fuller, wetter and fuller than average. Not thin or bright at all. Of course, this can interfere with use as real studio monitors, but I don't use them in the studio. They are used with the high-resolution digital player FiiO X-1 and shine in this role. They look good, are fairly efficient with no need for an external amplifier, they fit very well (five different rubber tips are included to ensure all but the oddly shaped ear canals are happy) and they offer moderate isolation. Some ambient noise gets through — they're not as sealed as "foam" or triple-flange hearing protection earplugs — but they're not as "open" as a regular pair of over-ear or open-back headphones. As such, they're likely to work well in moderately noisy environments. On a bus or plane, you definitely need full noise-cancelling headphones. All in all, I can't imagine better headphones. I mean headphones. If they were cheaper I would give them away on Halloween to introduce QUALITY SOUND to all the kids. Highly recommended!
