My S450DLX arrived today. I put new batteries in and had this awkward feeling, you know how you get it the night before your boss texts you that he wants to meet you at his office tomorrow. Maybe it's because two other Grundigs I bought brand new from Amazon arrived earlier with a defect, and my S350 which was working fine until it suddenly had internal noise, static noise spreading like a virus through the ribbons spread. His synth went south. So I turned on the S450DLX, it would turn on and then I tried turning the tuning VFO to change the station. Nothing has happened. It spun and could not change stations. and I need to do a master reset. In short, this radio should have come from Fisher Price and not Grundig. Reviews on Youtube and Eham reflect poor quality and problems with this radio. Well, before you shoot the messenger. I understand that some of you may have had better luck with the S450DLX. But I am a top-class licensed radio amateur and in 40 years I have collected many, many radio amateurs, communications and HF devices of all kinds. I can tell you from experience that quality control at Eton-Grundig suffers and they rely on the tried and true Grundig name to produce cheap, low quality receivers that they hope YOU will buy. The old Grundi models are good, NOT those from the last 5 years. The best new radio I have used in the last 5 years is the Satellite 800 and for value for money the Degen DE1103 and the older Panasonic RF2200. Eton Grundig can't even turn on the product detector to receive USB-LSB in its trash can. The Degen 1103 has it all, it's really sensitive and sounds great, and it has USB LSB modes too. Also for great sound. Except for the weird battery. TecSun PL-880 is a shortwave HiFi. And everything C-Crane sells is super quality. But AVOID the S350 and S450DLX and the new Grundig FIELD radio like the plague. You are a big disappointment. By the way, the new FIELD model is muted when tuned, so you get a chug-chug sound while tuning. Eton Grundig. wake up people OK, I changed my mind and gave this model a second chance. I've ordered another one from Revain. It arrived today and had no problems with the VFO like the first one. Although the factory, not the carrier, packs the S450DLX in crappy flimsy packaging, the second 450 works fine. Note. The range and bandwidth control of BOTH radios is loose and unreliable, so extra care must be taken when using the switches to avoid rapid breakage or wear. Eton/Grundig could have designed and manufactured these radios much better. They are of low to medium quality. Keep in mind that they now sell new for less than $70. They are entry level. However, the other models I linked above are much better radios. I am both a collector and user of these kits and I doubt that this radio will still be working 20 years from now. My S350 partially failed after 3 years. The S350 has better sound than the S450DLX. So I tell you, buy a radio if it has a replacement guarantee, you can buy it cheaply, and if it fails after a few years, I'm okay with it. I'm just very disappointed with the quality control and R&D department at Eton/Grundig. How great would it be if this S450DLX had a BFO or product detector so you could hear the ham radio bands? Sangean, C-Crane and Degen do.
