Although the assembly instructions weren't very good, we got the unit up and running fairly quickly. The first taste was amazing and we loved it! However, after a few days the water tasted rubbery. We had two black filters and small rubber plugs to cover the holes for extra filters. It is arranged in such a way that the water to be filtered does not completely drain from the top, leaving an inch of water in the upper reservoir at all times. The water is sucked into these rubber stoppers, which is later mixed with the water that has been filtered downwards. It doesn't make sense to me that the water you want to filter has to be in something that leaves a HORRIBLE taste even after it's passed through the filters. As recommended by Berkey customer service, we soaked the candles in warm, soapy water for 30 minutes. All washed. At first we thought the problem was solved and the water tasted good again. But a few hours later, after "sitting" on the cork, it smelled and tasted awful again. If they find something other than smelly gum to plug the holes I might try this filter again. But I'm trying to make my water better, NOT worse. If you use all four filters, you don't have this problem. We don't have fluoride in our water, so we didn't need filters. Note. Keep the packaging for several weeks.
