How can a water filter be toxic?

This filter was designed to remove toxins but from the moment it arrived it smelled like something I can't describe but that sort of thing makes nose hairs frizzy. He filled my whole apartment. I tried rinsing it and flushing the filter with water several times but ended up giving me a headache until I wrapped it in several layers of plastic and put it in the closet where I keep it until I figure out how to do it get back in time. Blocking. I don't know if it was stored somewhere or with…

It took a few hours to set up and then it all leaked out

Given the rave reviews I'm shocked at this experience. For $300, you can deep clean the unit, reassemble it, and "refill" the filters (which in itself is an experience worthy of a 1/5 star). My husband and I followed the directions to T! The result is a completely ruined dresser and thank goodness we have cement floors here. Nozzle and seals do not provide a tight flushing connection. Other problems include filters that have to be filtered forever (not even close to the hourly rate provided by…

Choose your size carefully.

Because I love purified water and want the same quality of water everywhere, this purchase made sense.* Very high-quality container. It is neither thin nor fragile. I was expecting a lower quality since the money is in the filters but everything is well done. * Water filter faster than expected. I thought it was a drip-drip, but it's more of a drip-drip-drip. I highly recommend watching YouTube for filling in filters so you don't have to worry. Do not refill the upper part until the lower part…

Excellent filter - after a lot of work

Excellent filter. The steel tanks are strong and the filter actually cleans the water better than any other system I've used. But initially I had major problems with the rubber smell (as did many other reviewers). The problem is the rubber plug and washers that come with the system. Your best bet is to throw them away and buy silicone washers (just search online - you can't find them in hardware stores). I also only have 4 charcoal filters instead of 2 (eliminating the need for rubber plugs)…

Disappointing in use

Did not live up to expectations. It was purchased for a recently purchased family cabin along the Canadian border in northern Minnesota for summer use by members of our family. Water for purification was taken from a crystal clear lake that had a predictable risk of infection with Giardia and the like. Bought a machine with two filters"black berk". Primed according to instructions. The tag worked fine, the tag slowed down then it barely dripped. Consulted the company (manufacturer customer…

Very bad gummy taste after a few weeks of use

Although the assembly instructions weren't very good, we got the unit up and running fairly quickly. The first taste was amazing and we loved it! However, after a few days the water tasted rubbery. We had two black filters and small rubber plugs to cover the holes for extra filters. It is arranged in such a way that the water to be filtered does not completely drain from the top, leaving an inch of water in the upper reservoir at all times. The water is sucked into these rubber stoppers, which…

Berkey is the best scam in water filtration and softening

The company that makes the Berkey filter is really a scam. Despite being so popular and having been around for so long, they're not NSF certified (this is a basic certification that requires independent verification that your filter actually does what it says it does and doesn't add anything to the water) . Also, they are not sold in California because they do not want to comply with California's lead-free law. Berkey argues that this requirement is too expensive and inconvenient, which is a…

Beware of used/restored Berkeys! :(

I ordered a Big Berkey through Revain in September 2017. The description said "Seller: Revain.com Services, Inc. has no cosmetic scratches or imperfections. Item has no cracks or The Berkey arrived with a small dent in the case that I could live with. Then when I put it back together I found that both of the black plastic wing nuts had snapped off. Buying new online was quite expensive ($30 for a spares kit) and I read a link that said wing nuts could be secured with tape so I did that and it…

Works well with primer setting, except industrial shims

Media failed to load. The main problem: The washers are made of industrial rubber and leave a rubber smell and taste in the water. They should maybe be made of food grade silicone. I still don't know how to solve this problem, but I can't use the filter because of this problem. The instructions could have been a lot clearer, but we found some YouTube videos that might be helpful. The mostly obscure instructions involved priming with a priming pump (which we preferred) rather than the faucet…
