28 used to upgrade from 23

I bought these to upgrade my wife's bike from 700x23 to 700x28. I was able to do the same with my road bike with caliper brakes. Spacing always becomes an issue as sizes increase. Especially when some bike tires can be inflated beyond their size and specification. In this case, I figured my wife's frame would do the same since my hardcase nylon 28 wheels clean up nicely on a road bike. nope The truth can only be found with a micrometer. I actually found my Hardcase Nylon 28s inflated to 27mm wide. These Continentals inflate to 29mm at 80psi. at minimum standard pressure. One could visually see that the tire became larger. Pump them up after forcing them through a loose caliper. There was enough excessive bulge(?) to cause friction on the brakes and fork. I solved the problem by installing them on my frame that had more clearance. So be careful. not all 28s actually inflate to 28 and stop. I drove them a bit on rough pavement. I found them very grippy and held my 250 pound weight very well. They are easy to install/remove by gently prying the tire open. While my wife did complain about initial rubbing due to being too big for her body, she found they rolled smoothly and were a definite improvement over asphalt cracks and other drastic anomalies. I appreciated it due to the rough local roads and my wife has a number of charity rides ahead of her and the old 23 was dry and no longer sticky. Delivery time was next day. Depending on whether they're turning into flat demons or sucking out a few flat tires, I might come back to appreciate the durability and longevity. They appear to be lighter tires (not fat commuters).

Pros
  • Durable finish
Cons
  • Damaged
