Review on HPS Performance Shortram Air Intake Kit 827-537WB – Enhanced with Black Heat Shield for Optimal Engine Performance by Jeff Davidson

Good intake, needs extra work

Miata '03 tightened. It is significantly louder than the stock exhaust. You only hear the whistling of the air when adjusting the speed, otherwise it is a hoarse growl, especially at full throttle above 3k rpm. Sounds very good and makes the car much louder if you want it. Smooth driving is the same as stock. The polished version looks great in the engine bay, although it's not a high gloss finish (micro-scratches are visible up close). Installation is fairly easy, but there are a few things that require special attention: 1. The supplied bent section of hose for connection to the throttle body is too long. I used a small wood saw to make the cuts and made about 4 trial cuts. This material is quite difficult to cut (it's basically impossible to cut with regular scissors or the heavy duty cutters I used in step 2) and it creates gum. Dust that needs to be cleaned before installation.2. I couldn't install the heat shield without modification. It's possible, but to screw in all 3 screws you have to bend the vertical side that is next to the rack post. To make it fit I used some metal cutters to remove a small part. If you stand in front of the car and face the driver, I cut off the lower right corner of the vertical side facing you at the pillar support. Thus, it does not rest against the turret, and the bolts enter with difficulty. The rest of the instructions are pretty clear. As someone else said, if you are unfamiliar with the process, check out the YouTube video as it doesn't specifically say to remove specific parts.
