It smelled of essential oil.
I bought this to replace my Flex 15. Unfortunately, it smelled directly of lavender essential oil. I tried cleaning it but I couldn't get rid of the smell. It works well, I've tried pouring it into a bucket of water to clean it, but I won't risk my favorite fish.
