Canister filters do not seal well. I think the use case for them MIGHT be great for some. Positive. You can remove and clean the entire filtration system (very difficult with a sump and yes, detritus/other debris can go through your mechanical filtration and stick to your biological media/tank walls/etc) Very quiet Good flow aquarium. can be a disadvantage. I use mine on a 75g tank and a sandy substrate. The current is so gentle that all the debris goes into the canister and I never have to pebble the sand again like I have before. I had to use a 530gph shaft generator to help with a dead center but it cost about $12. The garbage has to be somewhere. You either have to vacuum it up or it gets stuck in your mechanical filtration. I'd rather just concentrate it in one spot (in the can) so I don't have to look at it, and clean the can in a tightly stocked 75g African cichlid tank every two weeks. Keeps tank clean, ammonia/nitrite at zero, and nitrates are 10ppm after a few months of use (might be higher later, I'll be sure to keep an eye on it) Too much current can be a problem for some BigTips1 fish. Purchase an optional outlet valve and attach a 1-inch pond hose to it. and BOOM, you have Python, which is MUCH faster. I can fill 40 gallons of water for a 50% water change in about 5 minutes from a holding tank 20 feet away in my bath that already has a cichlid dechlorinator/buffer/salt and I stick a digital thermometer in the holding tank as I fill to make sure I don't shock my fish with a sudden change in temperature, which is EASY to do with a python.2. The dump valve is excruciatingly slow on large water changes, but that's also an option. Use a reinforced 5/8" hose like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MRUROKO/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_10?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1. Removing the hose can make a mess if Water will be left in the hose, so you can use a 5/8 quick disconnect with valves.(The valve will shut off the water flow when the fitting is loosened.) Part numbers: HFCD221012 HFCD171012 This will slow the flow even more (this type of valve slows the water flow ), but eliminates the possibility of confusion.3. To keep the inlet/outlet hoses out of the way during maintenance: A. Attach a 10 ft. command bar hook to the bottom of the aquarium just above the canister filter Attach a loose wire tie to the outlet and inlet valves C. When moving the canister to/from the aquarium, attach the inlet/outlet hoses to the bottom of the aquarium so they are out of the way4 e when setting up the aquarium, make sure that the outlet valve is as short and straight as possible. The inlet can be long as it is gravity fed by the siphon principle, but the outlet must be actively pumped through the canister and the flow rate can be much slower if it is far away. I think you could use this knowledge to your advantage if you want lower bitrates.
