Let me start by saying that I'm obsessed with making perfectly round balls of ice cream, not cracked ones. They were cracked and cloudy the first few times. The second time the same thing happened. I used bottled water both times so I know it wasn't a purity issue. Then I went to good old Google, looked at a few websites and decided to try the suggestions I found on various websites. After 18-24 hours I have almost perfect balls. So here's what I did: Use filtered water. I used bottled water because that's all I had besides tap water. Warm up the water. YES WARMTH! Heat it up to a warm touch. It shouldn't be hot or too warm as it will form into an ice shape. But you want to be warm. You will find out, trust me. Pour water into molds. I filled it just below the fill line, but not so much that it was noticeable. Carefully place the lid on the mold. I just let it fall gently. NOW... Place a kitchen towel or two (depending on how many pans you are using) on a flat surface in the freezer. Wrap the molds with kitchen towels so that they are completely covered. Make sure the shapes line up on the towel. Freeze and return after 18 hours or more. Leave the forms for 5 minutes or more, depending on the situation. You don't want them to thaw too much. I didn't water the molds to release the balls. Remove the silicone cover. Now my bullets didn't come out with a spike. I kept them down for a few more minutes and then turned them upside down and the balls came out with a slight squeeze. Clean, round and without cracks. Some of the vertices were a bit flat, but that might be because I didn't fill them to the fill line. I was very pleased with how they turned out.
