Review on Voigtlander 21Mm ASPHERICAL Nokton Mount by Elijah Pope

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great lens with flaws

Just received. I'll add a few more photos here later, but first impressions are that the lens is very solid, the handling is very good and the image quality is excellent. Wide open sharp everywhere. Vignetting is noticeable at F1.4 but fixable. From F2.8 it decreases significantly. Update 1: For astrophotography, coma is very moderate at F1.4, improves at F2.0. This and the severe vignetting at F1.4 can pose a problem for Astros. Update 2: I mentioned earlier that this is very impressive in good light. Here I have uploaded some photos to show that it is very average to say the least before stopping for the night. At F1.8 he shows flare and severe coma. It gets a lot better on a stop but then the F1.4 advantage is lost and there are other 2.8 alternatives like Loxia and Batis. In fact, this isn't a lens that can be used at night with a wide-open aperture, except for night portraits. I'm giving it 4 stars for now because I think the price is a bit over the top. If 21mm wasn't important, the Sony 24mm GM would be a better choice, and that's only $200 more. If you keep going to F2.8 and above all the time, then Zeiss lenses are very strong contenders.

Pros
  • Electronics
Cons
  • Everything great
