Review on Fred CORKY Vacuum Wine Pump: Authentic and Effective by Kianoush Hinrichsen

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Cork works well as a wine stopper but not for storing wine

The Corky Wine Vacuum Pump is designed to preserve wine by removing excess air from the bottle after opening. The black rubber end is inserted into the neck of the bottle and you pump the artificial cork until you can no longer pump to deflate. Artificial cork looks quite realistic and beautiful. I've tried Corky with champagne and white wine bottles and it works with both and should work with most bottles (although I can't say it works with all bottles). The cork works great as a regular bottle stopper as it fits into the neck of the bottle and is handy if your wine stopper breaks. Also, the cork seems particularly suited to sealing a champagne bottle as the expanded cork no longer fits the bottle and I have found that it keeps the champagne fizzing for a few days or so. trusting that he's getting enough air to make a difference. I don't notice any improvement over using a regular wine cork or original cork. Also, my screwpull wine vacuum (a good quality separate metal pump with small rubber stoppers) definitely pulls in more air and forms a tighter seal. I can tell by the fact that the pump is very resistant and I can feel the seal breaking when I remove the rubber stopper. I don't know if that's enough for a fine Bordeaux, but I think my screwpull helps preserve the flavor of an inexpensive Chardonnay or Pinot Grigio good enough to drink a week later (but preferably within a few days). . Even though the Corky is more compact, it adds height, making it difficult to place the bottle vertically in the fridge. I still give Corky 3 stars as it's useful to have a wine or champagne cork handy, but I don't think it lets enough air through to effectively preserve the wine.
