This is intentional, so not necessarily a minus. It's non-magnetic, so it takes up space in your supplies. However, it is heavy and of excellent quality and will last much longer than a traditional needle threader. The plastic behind the wire also makes it easier to put on the needle. You almost don't have to look. This would be ideal for people with vision problems. after you get used to it, of course.
