Review on Nikwax Cotton Proof Waterproofing: Enhance Durability & Repel Water by Charlie Conner

As noted by other reviews, it looks and smells like diluted white Elmer glue. Be sure to shake well and follow directions. My deviations from the instructions: After washing my clothes (jackets and pants) with regular detergent, I ran a full cycle with a cup of vinegar. Then take them out and run a full cycle with just water and vinegar (no clothes) to wash off any soap residue. Put the clothes back, fill the machine with water (all parts should be cold), add half a bottle, turn on the agitation cycle, then stop the machine and let it sit for at least an hour. Restart the machine from the beginning and let it go through all the cycles without stopping. Place clothes in a static-free/soft fabric dryer on the lowest setting. Did it with cotton blend Wrangler work pants, no-name polycotton jacket, polyester jersey winter hat, LL Bean barn jacket (factory Teflon treated), and Carhartt heavyweight cotton jacket (no factory waterproofing). . LL Bean and Carhartt jackets have been treated with silicone. Both wick well, the LL Bean jacket isn't as good as the Carhartt. The pants wick some water, they no longer absorb water like a towel, but they are not waterproof (shouldn't expect impermeability anyway). I plan to use this material annually for all my regular work outerwear.
