No frills just spool

This item arrived quickly but when I opened the package the spool fell on the carpet and the top parted from the bottom. I was able to reattach it but I feel the spool is fragile and as I bought it for a child I wonder how long it will last. I was also disappointed with the lack of instructions for use.
