Review on Master the Art of Soldering with VOGURTIME: Your Ultimate Electronics Learning and Practice Tool by Shane Schobinger

TL; DR - This is a good kit for beginners, it will be a great first project.

All in all, the Vogurtime AM FM Radio Solder Kit is one of the best solder kits I have ever made. I bought it to practice soldering with my new soldering iron (Hakko FX888). A few things made this set particularly different from others I've made in the past. Firstly the quality of the board. On other boards I had a problem with traces and pads pulling up when I tried to solder them. Part of the problem is that I didn't know how to properly set the heat on my old iron, but with this board I didn't notice this problem. There were even components that I had to unsolder and try again because they didn't seat properly the first time and I had no problems. For a $20 kit I was very impressed with how well made the board is. Second instructions. First let me say that the one page guide that comes with the box set is not a complete guide. Full instructions will be sent via message or email to save paper. If you're new to soldering I'd recommend going with the full kit, but if you're a bit of an electrician you can definitely get by with the ones included in the kit. That's another thing that impressed me about this set. Others I've built were written in broken English and sometimes difficult to understand, but that wasn't a problem here. Anyone can read this manual, see the pictures, look at the circuit board and understand which component goes where and how to install it. Thus, this kit is perfect for soldering beginners. Third, the finished product. Working AM/FM radio! It took me a bit of debugging to get it working, but if you take your time and make good solder joints you shouldn't have this problem. It has good volume and sounds good for what it is. I get about a dozen FM stations without tweaking the knob and a couple of AM stations. I'm thinking of taking mine on my next hike, it's the right size and weight for something like this. So, I applaud this project, but what doesn't make it good? In other words, resistances. Resistors could definitely be packaged better to be more user friendly for electrical and soldering beginners. The instructions include color codes for each value, but this can be a bit confusing if you don't already know how to read them. I used my multimeter to find out what the value of each resistor is. However, this is more of a joke. Overall, the set is very beginner-friendly and presents beginners with little or no problems. I recommend this set for beginners. This is great for practicing your soldering skills. You can learn how to solder components to the board with leads and wires, and by the end you'll be much more confident with the iron. I think this set is also good for people with a lot of soldering experience. You can create it in a few hours and it offers multiple options for modification. For example, I'm thinking about adding a headphone jack.

Pros
  • Great STEM project. This radio kit is an electronic learning kit, it is very convenient for electronics beginners and students to learn soldering or electronics skills. Not only will you improve your soldering skills, but you will also learn a lot of interesting things!
Cons
  • Not bad, but...
