Very good speakers with some flaws

I'll start by not being a music lover. I just want some small quality speakers. My previous speakers have been Creative Pebble speakers as well as various Logitech models. I don't have room on my desk for big bookshelf speakers, and I don't really need a subwoofer, at least not yet. I'll start with the design. The speakers look great with minimal branding. Even with LEDs, they don't scream "gamer speakers". The LEDs themselves have a soft diffused light, they can be turned off. You get your regular colors and then the breath kit. However, I would like to have a color cycle option. The speakers are quite heavy for their size (okay!) and all of my cables were long enough for me. I like that the power button is separate from the volume control so I never have to find the right spot when turning on the speakers. The volume control is nice and meaty, and the equalizer/color select button works well. Turning the speakers on and off, as others have pointed out, makes an awkward noise. When they turn on, the sound of the engine woooooooooom is accompanied by a typical sci-fi pew-pee. Turning off gives only scifi pew pew with no engine sound. OK, it doesn't matter. I wish you could turn that off. Turn on the sound! Again, not an audiophile. My first try with these speakers was to use the built in USB sound card/amp/whatever. I tried the music first and everything sounded good enough to me. Clear sound and even quite a lot of bass for 2.0 speakers. You will definitely get LOUD. But then I started Borderlands 3. I couldn't get it to sound good over USB. All three modes did the same thing, but video mode produced the harshest "S" tones, and the highs were generally very shrill. If it was loud, it was too loud, and if it was quiet, it was too quiet. And the sound came across as very empty, as if it lacked the fullness of how speakers should sound. It sounded like I was listening through a tin can. I have no idea why it was so different from when I was making music, but it was awful and I was very disappointed. I checked the Edifier website to see if there is a USB firmware update but I couldn't find anything. Then I tried using the 3.5mm AUX port. This is the sound I was looking for! I felt like I was back in the game with FULL sound and improved bass. I no longer had any shrill S-sounds, and I didn't feel any roughness even at high volume. Everything looked "right" as it should be. I haven't tried the Bluetooth connection. I expect it to be fine for music or TV, but I wouldn't use it for gaming as Bluetooth generally has some latency. I didn't really take that into account in my review, but it's a nice feature! Another nice feature I didn't mention is the bass output for subwoofers. Both just upgrade a set of 2.0 speakers. All in all, I don't know if these speakers are worth $100. I bought it on sale for $75 which seems normal. I've spent a lot of time complaining about how bad they sound over USB, so it might have something to do with my setup. I do not know. Since they weren't perfect for me, but still very good, I gave them 4 stars. In the end I got the sound right, but the USB mode was disappointing and the on/off sounds are very boisterous. I highly recommend them if you can get them on sale.
