Excellent Quality, Good Selection

Variety brush sets, especially those with just a few brushes, are a blessing for fill-in purposes. I.e., if you have a good range of brushes already but need a replacement or two, or perhaps want to try out a different stroke type, this type of set is just the thing. On the other hand, it is no substitute for a more extensive set for someone starting out. R&L offers these variety sets in, well, a variety of combinations, so finding what you want without having to buy unwanted brushes is pretty easy. I was primarily after the oval wash, fan, and angular brushes in this set. The small point and flat brushes are extras for me.The R&L Moderna brushes are good, mid to upper-mid-level artist brushes. The line uses Taklon, which is a decent synthetic suited to most paints (depending on the particular brush, of course). The Moderna 77 sub-line uses some natural hair as well. I'm not sure if the brushes in this particular set (77 series) are a blend or 100% Taklon, however, as they look like Golden Taklon. The hairs are wonderfully soft, though! Tips are well-shaped. The handles are plastic, are shaped nicely, are a good length, and feel good in the hand. The color? Well, I'll leave that to taste. I'm not a fan of the aluminum ferrules, but they work fine. I just don't expect the retention or toughness that you get from better ferrule materials. It's a well-made synthetic brush line at a really good price point. In other words, a good value without being a "value" product in the pejorative sense.Nice brushes.
