The purpose of them is to make your shirt look like you're somehow magically preventing it from being partially unbuttoned and a top in to create a stylish muffin look. They do a very good job - the clips are secure and stay on my feet. They're also quite comfortable (although they seem a bit odd at first) and I forget I'm wearing them. tighter pants and/or specific leg positions, but I think it's still mostly hidden behind the pockets, so I don't think it matters much. I don't think anyone will notice.
