Review on Philips Hue Dual-pack Switch Module by Robby Fingaw

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Poor performance from Phillips Hue - don't buy it. To save money!

No ordinary reviewer. But this product is new, I was excited and very disappointed. So I thought I could help you save some money. This module is battery operated. It does NOT use the power of the house's existing wall switch.2. The battery life is 5 years so you will spend a TAG every 5 years removing all wall panels/switches and replacing the batteries.3. It cost $40. The $25 Phillips Hue wall switch (which doubles as a detachable magnetic remote) does the same, supporting dimming and full Hue functionality. Much more functionality than your home switch, even with this $40 module. This Hue switch module allows you to bypass the house switch wiring and connect the house wiring to the included nut and then connect the module to the house wall switch. THIS ONE! So, save your money and do what I'm about to do (after I get those Hue switches back in Revain).1. Completely remove your home's wall switch.2. Connect house switch wiring (as required for this module).3. Spend $25 + $5 ($30) for the Hue Wall Switch and a 3D printed switch cover that works with the Hue Wall Switch. The $25 wall switch also uses a battery that needs to be replaced every 3 years (I currently have 4-5). And now you have a Hue wall switch that looks great with a 3D printed Hue switch cover. YOU HAVE THE EXACT SAME SOLUTION THAT PHILLIPS OFFERS WITH THIS $40 PRODUCT. IMPRESSIVE! I love Hue, I have 20 different colored lights, wall switches, motion sensors, etc. LOVE YOU. But this new "module" is poorly executed. Does NOT consume house energy (requires battery). You'll have to rewire the house wiring to bypass the wall switch. 40 dollars! Again, the $25 Hue wall switch does the same thing. You can mount it on the wall next to the home switch, or you can bypass the home switch and buy a $5 3D printed wall plate that your $25 Hue Switch can use and support all Hue features. This module does NOT support all Hue functions. Sorry Phillips, but this product was lazy! Try again. Final Comment = Phillips Hue claims to be a Lutron partner. 40 dollars? Why not replace a switch that can use the electricity at home (no battery)? It's $40, maybe $50. I've spent days, weeks looking for something like this. And this module was the best Phillips came up with? Phillips, please make your own built-in wall switch or use your partnership with Lutron to make one for you.

Pros
  • Easy setup
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.
