Good Stropping Leather

If you want a really nice polished edge after sharpening a chisel or plane, this leather will do. I do a primary bevel (25 degrees) on chiseling/planing with a Work Sharp or slow speed grinder. Then I use the Lee Valley grinding guide to apply a secondary bevel (30 degrees) with three waterstones up to 8000. Finally I seal the secondary bevel with green compound on the leather. It takes on a high gloss finish and I will tweak it for fine work on a belt. Understand that editing is not the same as sharpening. Applying polishes while sharpening gives sharpness to the tool. FYI I glued the plank to two layers of 3/4" MDF and stapled the shelf/drawer insert piece to the bottom to keep it in place when in use. Update: I ordered a second leather strap for the suede side to use with Tormek putty. There were knife cuts on that side so I had to send it back. I ordered another one hoping the first one was an accident. I removed the green mix from the original one and now I cut on the smooth leather side (smooth). I did this because I'll be sharpening some carving chisels and a curved spoon knife. on MDF and finished with light oil and Tormak PA70 honing paste. It works great for polishing the secondary land on chisels. My carved chisels are terribly sharp. grooving.

Pros
  • REVERSIBLE LEATHER BELT: One side of the leather strap is smooth, the other side is suede. It is usually worth using suede in combination with compositions and satin finish for smooth glazing beads, this is by no means universal. We concluded that this decision was a combination of personal choice and the type of edge being sharpened. Finally, it helps you achieve extremely sharp and highly polished edges.
