Ultronic's waterproof ultrasonic sensor is great for measuring hydroponic tanks - use the Arduino ping sketch.

English instructions are missing, and it is easy to deal with four wires. The sensor is a PWM output, which lends itself well to using a simple Arduino ping sketch to monitor and a serial monitor to output readings. Laboratory tests are confirmed by water level measurements in a 5-gallon orange pail from Home Depot. The sensor is mounted on a removable cover with two holes cut in the cover allowing the sensor to see the water level inside. The sensor is integrated into the water level monitoring system of the garden tank. The best sensor in this price range so far.
