After buying hard drive docking stations for a couple of my most commonly used computers, I now use external 500M/1T internal drives to quickly switch between backups and other data. Docking stations can hold two drives (even clone one onto the other), so now I have no excuse for not making regular backups. No need to open cases or clamshells - just turn off the station, plug it in, turn on the power, verify that the systems recognize the drive(s), and you're good to go. The drives don't even seem to get hot, which helps with their longevity. I can schedule regular background backups, making it a "set it and forget it" task.
