These are very good bins, much larger than usual which is important to me as I have a very large cat. If you sometimes need more trays and sometimes less and/or have to travel with a tray, then the folding function is important. I also see that they advise you to use it folded for kittens - it will work, but it's not my first choice. I picture kittens kicking the debris into the crack as it collapses, which isn't a disaster, but it's not a good thing either. It was difficult for me to open them, it required strength that I did not have in my hands. Finally, I laid her on the floor and pushed her down with my feet while pulling her up with my hands. When unfolded, the nice high sides should help slow the migration of dirt from the box onto the floor.
