I think if you are considering buying this particular model of camera then: a. You view the update from a point-and-shoot. or b. Intermediate to advanced photographer looking for a decent rear camera. Since I got this camera, I've been taking a lot of photos with my boyfriend, who makes a living from photography. My friend uses a Fujifilm S3 pro digital SLR camera. Let me tell you that there isn't a huge difference in image quality between the $700 d40x and the $2300 S3 Pro when using the same lens. Both cameras are capable of almost equally impressive shots. The main difference is that when you buy a d40x you get roughly the same photo quality for more than three times the price of the average pro DSLR. Camera body only. Not that the kit lens is bad, but it does limit what you can do with your d40. Using the Nikon 18-200mm VR lens made me believe how important a really good lens is for great photography. My only gripe with the d40x is the lack of adjustment buttons and aperture wheel found on pricier DSLRs. to have. It can be a bit annoying to go to the camera's menu screen to make simple adjustments. The PRO certainly outweighs the few downsides this camera has. This is a great DSLR to start with. The only real limitation of the d40x is the skill of the person behind it.
