Red night lights are good for maintaining night vision

I like it very much. I bought them for a trip because every hotel we visit has the bathroom light on so we don't bump into the furniture when we have to get up at night. I always feel this is wasteful and I wish I had forgotten to buy a night light for our trip. Well, not anymore. I bought red night lights because red light affects your night vision less (it's related to visual purple or rhodopsin if you're into vision science). And I went to MARS - the Maine Astronomy Retreat - and I wanted the red lights in our cabin to help us keep our night vision at its peak. There are two night lights in the box, so I was able to put one in our cabin bathroom and one in the living room. They gave enough light to walk and were not so bright as to disturb sleep. The night light's acrylic front is a material that scratches easily, so I was a bit disappointed that they arrived in a box with no protective film or packaging. After taking them out and trying them out at home, I wrapped them in paper towels before putting them back in the box for our trip. The light mainly comes from the edges. It's hard to explain, but once you've seen these acrylic signs with neon borders, you'll understand. This gives an interesting effect and diffuses the light without falling directly into your eyes. I had no problems with night lights at all. I love them so much that I am considering other colors for my home as a decorative night light. These aren't the cheapest night lights out there, but you get two of these in the box, and since they're LED, they should last you quite a while.

Pros
  • Energy efficient night light, no need to change bulbs. Save on your electricity bill.
Cons
  • Slightly torn
