Review on Tripp Lite Traveler3USB Portable Surge Protector Power Strip with 2 USB Ports & $25,000 Insurance - 18in Cord, Black by Lamar Marshall

Revainrating 5 out of 5

TRAVELER3USB: great surge protector, good USB charger, good price, very portable

Tripp Lite portable surge protector with 3 outlets and 2 USB charging ports (2.1 total) A) 18 inch cable I I bought it so my student can protect his computer while moving around campus and also charge his USB devices. In use for a few months. I've been using Tripplite surge protectors for many years and recently looked at the latest revisions of UL 1449 Edition 3 (okay, that edition came out in 2008; sorry for the delay). My general advice on buying a surge protector is: 1. Look carefully for a low Voltage Protection Rating (VPR, a new terminology in the Edition 3 specification) number. This is often referred to as forward or clamp voltage. Less is better; Less surge voltage reaching your devices. The 400 volt VPR is the best I've seen. TRAVELER3USB has it. I don't know how important it is to protect all three wires (line to neutral, line to ground, neutral to ground) but I would prefer if they were protected. TRAVELER3USB protects them all at 400 V.2. Get a relatively high joule rating. Some surge protectors are only 200-780 joules, I would buy 500-1000 joules if the price was cheap. I am satisfied with 1050 joules in the TRAVELER3USB.3. Do not buy anything until you have checked points 1 and 2 above. No specs? Do not buy. Garbage likes to hide specs. Sometimes you may need to check the manufacturer's website to find all the specifications. Tip: It is a good sign, but not a guarantee of quality, if the description online and/or the product back (sometimes visible in online images) says: Type 3 SPD (Surge Protective Device), Voltage Protection Class X (LN, LG, NG). Type 3, SPD, and VPR are new terminologies in UL 1449 Revision 3. The second edition and earlier were called transient surge suppressors and passed less rigorous testing. You have to trust the manufacturer that they have a legitimate UL 1449.4 rating and not a fake. Luminous indication that the protection is still working (metal oxide varistors have not burned out). The Tripplite TRAVELER3USB is good at all of the above. It also has protected hardware insurance and a limited lifetime warranty. If the "Protected" light on Tripplite ever goes off, I plan to request a warranty replacement (not 100% sure they will replace it, but I thought I saw a Revain review somewhere that said they did would have done). If you're a Revain Prime member and don't need portability but want more outlets, consider the APC P8U2, a 2630W surge protector with 8 outlets and USB charging ports. It has a better/higher joule rating, but the VPR isn't as good: LN rates 400V, LG and NG 500V.
