I used 3 cheaper cards each using VIA IC or FPGA to capture DV video for a client. VIA-based cards PCIE cards were causing BSODs, appearing and disappearing in Device Manager, or just doing nothing. As a last-ditch effort before telling the customer that the Mini-DVs would be shipped to a mainland lab, I bought an Ableconn card, remembering that Texas Instruments chips were used in the original Firewire cards became. The Ableconn card uses TI IC. I used a card with WinDV. Success! I still can't record in PPr from the firewire port, but I think it's an Adobe issue. If you need to record from old mini DVs, bake the tapes at 140°F for 10 minutes to make the tape more flexible and allow to cool to room temperature. The baking effect lasts about 1 week, after which you need to re-bake to reduce the risk of peeling.
