Review on πŸ”Š Black SMSL Q5 Pro Digital Audio Amplifier by Raquel Perkins

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great desktop amp/DAC solution

Bought to power my pair of Pioneer SP-BS22-LRs in my office. I've read a lot of reviews on the Q5 Pro and I have to say I'm very happy with it for the money and footprint. I have a Chromecast Audio connected via an optical cable and I'm streaming music from Tidal to my phone. This amp has decent power to set up, but don't expect it to push less sensitive speakers too hard. I hooked up my Elac B5s and even at max volume (60) it was still a pleasure to hear right in front of the speakers. The good thing is that even at this high volume, there is no annoying distortion or excessive heat. However, I find it impractical to run an amp at 100% for a long period of time. One of the features I was looking forward to was the subwoofer output as I will eventually add a small subwoofer to create a 2.1 setup in my desk. I'm not sure if this is a full range output, but it should still suffice. A lot of people recommend it as an alternative to a soundbar with decent speakers and I definitely agree. Having owned traditional soundbars with wireless subwoofers I would say you are much better off with a real set of speakers and this amp/DAC. The remote isn't the best, I'm not sure if my Comcast (or other) remote can be programmed to control the volume on SMSL as I don't use it for that purpose.
