I live in a flat share and wash by hand in the tub. One of the biggest challenges is getting clothes dry enough to hang in the dryer. If you don't get enough excess water out of your clothes, your home will feel like a sauna and your clothes will smell musty. We tried several other laundry solutions before purchasing these Calliger wringers. The rack of lettuce idea was theoretically effective, but the capacity was too small and it took forever to wring out a whole stack of clothes. The centrifuge worked very well, but was short-lived, heavy, bulky and extremely inconvenient to use. I was hoping this would leave calloused fingers from hand-squeezing clothing. Immediately after unpacking, I was alerted by a strong smell emanating from the press roller. A strong, acrid chemical odor came from the press roll. It wasn't the smell of a rubber roller, but a very pungent chemical smell. I often refer to this as the "Made in China" smell that cheap Chinese goods have from their smelly chemical plants. I'm not saying that this spinner was made in such a factory, it just had a smell. I wanted to make sure that this chemical smell didn't transfer to the clothes. So I decided to wet a plain white men's shirt and run it through the spin cycle. The undershirt smelled very strongly, like a caustic chemical. I've tried soaking the shirt in baking soda and vinegar and spinning it 6 more times to try and dispel the odor, but to no avail. The smell stayed no matter what we did with the spin. Then we hoped we could get used to the smell. This press is huge and we were ready for a big one. It weighs 17 pounds and you really need it in a fixed area so you don't have to be constantly lifting and moving it. The handle is very long and awkwardly shaped, making it difficult to wring clothes if you don't have the perfect wringing height. As I said, we were prepared for the size and weight of the press, and we had the perfect spot for it on the sink. Setup was very easy and we got the Spin up and running in less than five minutes. We used the spin cycle to wring out a bunch of underwear. Three pairs of underwear fit well, but the t-shirt gave us constant problems. No matter how you set the tension when spinning, it wasn't adjusted, just rolled the laundry and water was still dripping off it. They had to turn the shirt 6-8 times to stop it dripping. This was with a properly set spin. We bought this press primarily for towels and blue jeans and I was very skeptical that it would do both. We decided to run a test swatch from our towels through the press to see how the press handled the thicker fabric. At that moment, spinning stopped working at all, the tension was not regulated, it just broke. We intentionally didn't do anything that could cause the press to go down in such a short amount of time. For the price I definitely expected it to last more than a day of washing and I was disappointed when we only managed the first load of laundry. The tensioning system is very poorly made and that's what broke on our device. Despite our bad experience, the company was very easy to deal with and we received a full refund for the spin. We decided against a replacement because we didn't think it would be any better, especially regarding the pungent chemical smell from the press roller. the customer service we received. Most companies would get us going. To this day we don't know if we have a lemon or if all Calliger presses are made the same way. Judging by the pungent smell, it's most likely the latter.
